A Few Ideas for Your Bussiness

small business Aug 17, 2018

Everyone has those brilliant, game-changing ideas that could transform their business. We say, “If I could just do a few simple things, this business would finally take off.” The truth is that great ideas are everywhere, and they often come from the most unexpected places.

After years of working in various office environments, from startups to large engineering firms, I've learned a few consistent truths. Some companies thrive while others stall out. Often, the difference lies in the culture and mindset they promote.

Whether you’re a one-person show or leading a growing team, here are four simple practices that can save you thousands and help you stand out in a competitive landscape design market:

1. Create a Culture of Continual Improvement

Never get too comfortable. Keep asking questions. Try something new. If it fails, that's perfect—you just found one more way not to do it. One of my favorite quotes is, “Failure is proof you are trying.”

I constantly ask my team (and even my clients), “What’s one thing we could do better?” When you reward curiosity and new ideas, you build trust and momentum. The companies that thrive are the ones that aren’t afraid to evolve.

2. Communicate What’s Most Important—Your WHY

This is huge. How can people support your business if they don’t know what drives it?

I try to share my WHY every chance I get:

“I wake up every day inspired to make an impact in other people’s lives so they can be encouraged to do the same for others.”

If you’re thinking, “I don’t know my WHY,” create one! Your WHY becomes your compass. It clarifies your team, attracts like-minded clients, and helps you make better decisions. When your WHY is clear, your culture follows.

3. Listen Well (Seriously, Just Listen)

The best leaders I know are expert listeners. They’re not the ones talking the most—they’re the ones tuning in. If you listen to your clients, they will tell you exactly what they want. That insight? That’s your golden ticket.

This applies to your team, too. Listening builds respect and loyalty, often leading to solutions you would never have thought of on your own.

4. Trust the People You Hire

This one hits close to home. So many business owners I’ve coached spend weeks hiring the “perfect” candidate, only to second-guess every move that person makes.

If that sounds familiar, here’s a hard truth: the trust issue might not be with your team but with you.

Learn to trust your process. Empower your team to contribute. Ask for their insights. Let them grow. Because if you hired them to add value, why wouldn’t you give them the space to do it?

These four practices aren’t complex, but they’re powerful. They’ve shaped the way I lead, design, and do business.

I'd love to hear from you.
– What’s something you’ve done that transformed your business?
– Have you defined your WHY?
– What kind of culture are you building?

Let’s keep the conversation going because we grow better together.
